Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada announces 56 youth recipients of 2008 Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships program

Corporate support of national scholarship program vital to opening doors
    for Club youth

MARKHAM, ON, June 24 /CNW/ - Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Future
Shop are pleased to announce this year's 56 recipients of the Future Shop
Future Leaders Scholarship. Future Shop also announced that it is enhancing
its support to Boys and Girls Club youth in 2008 with a significant 34%
increase in the Scholarship amount awarded. The Scholarships will enable these
youth to achieve their academic dreams this year and attend the college or
university of their choice for the September 2008 school term.
When recipients of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarship were
announced this month, they learned that the scholarship amount had increased
from $3,000 to $4,000 to meet the growing costs of tuition. Each scholarship
consists of a $3,500 or $3,000 cash award payable to the post-secondary
institution of the youth's choice and a $500 or $1,000 Future Shop gift card
to assist with the recipient's studies.
"We recognize the importance of providing continued opportunities for our
Future Leaders and by increasing the scholarship amounts we can give Canadian
youth the chance to achieve their educational ambitions," said Sue Voigt,
Director of Human Resources, Leadership and Communications, Future Shop. "We
are proud to be associated with Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and with
helping these very deserving youth to fulfill their potential."
Future Shop has supported the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships
program for eight consecutive years, as a signature element of the many
contributions the company has made to Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada in
helping today's youth become tomorrow's leaders. Since 2001, 441
post-secondary scholarships have been awarded to Boys and Girls Club youth to
assist them with pursuing and accomplishing their academic goals - bringing
Future Shop's total investment in youth development through the program to
$1.3 million.
Research shows that education is critical in shaping young people's
future prospects. According to a 2005 report by Canadian Policy Research
Networks, nearly 250,000 young Canadians 20 to 24 years old did not
successfully complete high school and did not pursue further education.
Because of a low level of education, they face major life challenges with
far-reaching consequences for their future families and society.
For Lisa Green, a Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club member since
the age of five, the scholarship she received in 2003 gave her the financial
means to attend college. "I was blown away by the Future Shop Future Leaders
Scholarship because not only did it pay for my tuition, but I also received a
$1,000 gift certificate for Future Shop. With that $1,000 gift certificate, I
was able to buy a new computer. Without any financial aid, going to college
probably wouldn't have been a possibility for me. Without Boys and Girls Clubs
of Canada and sponsors such as Future Shop, I believe many youth would be left
in the dark," said Green.
"With the costs of post-secondary education increasing year after year,
higher education can be out of reach for many young people. A lack of
educational opportunities can often lead to low self-esteem and
disappointments in career and life outcomes," said Pam Jolliffe, President and
CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. "These scholarships are a hugely
important incentive for our youth in building a solid foundation for a
positive future, and we thank Future Shop for its increased support."
Recipients of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships are selected
based on their outstanding contribution to their Boys and Girls Club and local
community, good academic standing and financial need.
