Bowmanville child to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Kyle Roberts of Bowmanville will receive a Fire
Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at the
Fire Safety Awards ceremony on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual ceremony
recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in
Ontario.
In the early evening two months ago, Kyle's three-year-old sister used a
step stool to reach a four-slice toaster on the kitchen countertop in her
home. Accidentally, she put a plastic package containing muffins on top of the
toaster and started the toaster. The plastic began to burn and melt. At the
time, Kyle's stepmother was vacuuming in another room and asked nine-year-old
Kyle to check on his sister. When Kyle found his sister and the fire in the
kitchen, he immediately moved her away from the melting and splattering
plastic and attempted to blow out the flames. When his attempts failed, he
called for his stepmother to assist. After directing Kyle and his sister out
of the house, Kyle's stepmother extinguished the fire with a portable fire
extinguisher.
"Kyle's actions definitely prevented his sister from being seriously
injured," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "His quick thinking to alert
his stepmother also helped to prevent extensive damage to the kitchen and
highlights the importance of his fire safety education lessons learned at his
public school from Clarington Emergency and Fire Services."
Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and
teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have
learned. Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
