TORONTO, Jan. 18 /CNW/ - The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed the following
arbitration eligible players, LHP SCOTT DOWNS, INF MARCO SCUTARO, RHP JASON
FRASOR, LHP GUSTAVO CHACIN, and LHP BRIAN TALLET.
DOWNS, 32, signed a three-year deal worth $10 million (US). The
Louisville, Kentucky native has spent the last three seasons with Blue Jays,
highlighted by a 4-2 record with a 2.17 ERA in 2007. He led the club with 81
appearances, a new career high, and led all AL lefties holding opposition LH
hitters to a .209 batting average. The 6'2", 190 lb lefthander owns a 21-17
career mark with a 4.41 ERA in six major league seasons. (Chicago Cubs- 2000,
Montreal 2000-2004 & Toronto 2005-current).
SCUTARO, 32, signed a two-year deal worth $2.65 million (US). The San
Felipe, Venezuela resident spent the last four seasons in Oakland, most
recently batting .260 with seven home runs and 41 RBI in 2007. He started
games at five different positions in 2007 (38-SS, 33-3B, 12-2B, 2-RF, 1-LF).
In 551 career games he has posted a .259 average with 31 home runs and 174
FRASOR, 31, signed a one-year deal worth $1.125 million (US). In 2007, he
posted a career low .220 opponents batting average, while striking out 59
batters in 57 innings. His 51 appearances ranked 3rd on the club in 2007.The
Chicago, Illinois native has spent his entire four-year career with the Blue
Jays, posting a 11-18 record with 21 saves and an ERA of 4.00.
CHACIN, 26, signed a one-year deal worth $725,000 (US). The Maracaibo,
Venezuela native posted a 2-1 record with a 4.18 ERA in five starts before
having season ending surgery on his left shoulder. The 5'11", 193 lb
lefthander has spent his entire four-year career as a Blue Jay, posting a
25-15 mark with a 4.18 ERA in 58 major league starts.
TALLET, 31, signed a one-year deal worth $640,000 (US). In 2007, the
6'7", 220 lb left-handed reliever, appeared in a career high 48 games, leading
to highs in innings pitched (62.1) and strikeouts (54). He allowed only one
home run in 2007, while holding opponents to a .215 average. In 101 big league
outings, he has posted a 6-6 record with a 3.72 ERA, while opponents have hit
