Blue Jays sign Barajas



    TORONTO, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have agreed to a one-year
contract with C ROD BARAJAS worth $1.2 million (US) with an option for 2009.
    BARAJAS, 32, spent last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 48
games, the Ontario, California native posted a .230 average with four home
runs and 10 RBI. A solid defensive catcher, Barajas has thrown out 33.7% of
potential base-stealers over his career. The 6'2", 230 lb. right-handed hitter
was a member of the 2001 World Champion Diamondbacks, batting .333 (3-9) with
two home runs in the playoffs. Originally signed by Arizona, the veteran of
nine seasons (Arizona 1999-2003, Texas 2004-06, Philadelphia 2007) is a career
.239 average with 62 home runs and 235 RBI in 584 games.
    To make room on the 40-man roster INF RAY OLMEDO has been designated for
assignment.
