Blue Jays Hire Scouts



    TORONTO, Dec. 27 /CNW/ - The TORONTO BLUE JAYS are pleased to announce
the following additions to the scouting department for the 2008 season.

    RAYMOND (Smoke) PETER LAVAL has been named Scouting Advisor. He will work
closely with Director of Scouting Jon Lalonde, assisting with player
evaluation in preparation for the MLB draft, in addition to handling special
assignments as directed by the front office. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
native was most recently the Head Coach at Louisiana State University (LSU)
from 2002-06. Under his direction the Tigers compiled a record of 210-109-1,
featuring two College World Series appearances and Southeastern Conference
Regular Season Championship in 2003. LAVAL, 52, directed the University of
Louisiana-Monroe to a 241-159 (.603) record, 2 NCAA Tournament appearances, 2
Southland Conference regular season championships (1999 & 2000) and one
Southland Conference tournament championship (1995) as Head Coach from
1994-2000. Prior to this appointment was an Assistant Coach at LSU from
1984-93. He has received such honours as 1995 Louisiana Sportswriters
Association Coach of the Year, 1999 Southland Conference Coach of the Year,
2002 Louisiana Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year, 2003 SEC Coach of
the Year; Louisiana Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year and 2004
Louisiana Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year.

    ANGELO (Chris) CHRISTOPHER BECERRA has been appointed scout for Alaska,
Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho and Montana. BECERRA,
30, played collegiate baseball at Santa Rosa Junior College and was a
California Junior College All-American in 1997. The Sonoma, California native
was a member of the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 1999 that participated in
College World Series. He began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach with
Santa Rosa from 2001-04 before embarking in a role as a Personal Trainer where
he worked with a number of Houston Astros' players.

    ROBERT (Rob) ST. JULIEN will cover Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and
Tennessee for the club in the upcoming 2008 season. ST. JULIEN, 35, spent the
2007 season working with the St. Louis Cardinals as a part-time scout. The
Opelousas, Louisiana native played a key role in the development and signing
of ten, Division 1 players during his time as Assistant Coach at Northeast
Texas Community College from 2004-06. In fact five of those players were
selected in the MLB draft. During is tenure at Pratt Community College in
Kansas (2000-04) as an Assistant Coach, the club set a record for victories
with 36, while nine players were selected in the MLB draft.
