TORONTO, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - The TORONTO BLUE JAYS announce the following
appointments to the coaching staff for the Las Vegas 51s (AAA) of the Pacific
Coast League for the 2009 season. MIKE BASSO will lead the club as field
manager, DAVE LaROCHE will be the club's pitching coach, KEN JOYCE as the
hitting coach, and JON WOODWORTH will be the team's trainer.
BASSO, returns for a 7th season in the Blue Jays organization. The
44-year-old played parts of four seasons (1988, 90, 92, 93) for the Las Vegas
franchise as a member of the San Diego Padres organization, also serving as
the Las Vegas hitting coach for the first half of the 1995 season. Basso has
10 years of experience as a manager, including four in the Blue Jays system,
and has posted a 692-644 (.518) record as a minor league manager.
LaROCHE, 60, most recently served as the pitching coach for the Blue Jays
AA entry, New Hampshire FisherCats over the past four seasons. The Ft. Scott,
Kansas resident has 21 years of coaching experience, including five seasons in
the Major Leagues (1989-91-White Sox, 1992-93-Mets) after a 14-year career as
a left-handed pitcher in the majors. Currently, his son's Adam and Andy
LaRoche play with the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Andy having spent parts of
three seasons as a third baseman with the 51s (2006-08). LaROCHE has been with
the Blue Jays organization since 2005.
JOYCE, will be returning for his 8th season in the Blue Jays system,
after spending the last two seasons as the hitting coach with New Hampshire
(AA) of the Eastern League. The 44-year-old has 15 years of coaching
experience with the Marlins and Blue Jays, including five seasons as a minor
league manager and four as a hitting coach.
WOODWORTH, returns for a 30th season in the Blue Jays organization, and
2009 will represent his 17th season at the AAA level. Jon is a 1980 graduate
of East Carolina University with a B.S. degree in Health/Physical Education
and a concentration in Sports Medicine.
