BETTER TOGETHER! COBS Bread and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada go together like Apple & Butterscotch

VANCOUVER, May 19 /CNW/ - Each spring, COBS and Big Brothers Big Sisters host a joint Scone Campaign through which good friends, good food and good fun are created:

Good Friends - COBS and Big Brothers Big Sisters partner up to nationally promote the 'big' need for more Big Brother and Big Sister volunteer mentors.

Good Food - COBS and Big Brothers Big Sisters work together to develop a gourmet scone that represents Big Brothers Big Sisters. This year's creation is the delicious Apple & Butterscotch scone!

Good Fun - On the last weekend of the campaign, COBS celebrates by donating 50¢ from every scone sold to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Many bakery locations are joined by Big and Little Brothers and Sisters and offer a wide variety of activities and treats to the community. This year's scone fundraising weekend is on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29.

COBS firmly believes that mentors can have a powerful influence on a child's development and is proud to align itself with Big Brothers Big Sisters. COBS places a high emphasis on learning and personal development by supporting and challenging its people to reach their full potential.

"Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters over the last few years has been an eye opening experience. We have seen firsthand the positive impact a Big Brother or a Big Sister can have on a Little" says Elise Gillespie, Vice President of COBS Bread.

Each of the 128 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies depends on donations to help recruit volunteers and reach more children. Funding received from caring companies like COBS is used to conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure child safety and provide ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to build long-lasting relationships. In just the third year of this partnership, COBS hopes to raise more than $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Canada.

"COBS Bread has raised $31,800 for Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2009, which has allowed agencies across the country to provide many children with the support of a mentor.  In addition, COBS has raised awareness of the urgent need for more Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers. COBS' in-store campaigns have inspired many men and women to volunteer their time to provide encouragement and support to a young person in need in their community.  We are so grateful for COBS' support of mentoring," says Shannon Newman-Bennett, Executive Director of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.
