Bell obtains ISO 14001 certification for environmental management

First telecom company in Canada to achieve international environmental
    standard

MONTREAL, Québec, May 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Bell today announced that it is
the first telecommunications company in Canada to obtain certification to ISO
14001, the international standard that specifies a process for controlling and
improving an organization's environmental performance.
Awarded by BSI Management System, one of the world's largest
certification bodies, for Bell's environmental management system, this ISO
14001 certification covers all of Bell's business lines, including enterprise
and other business services, wireless, digital television, Internet and home
phone products and services, and all related administrative functions.
"Governments are adopting sustainability policies and implementing these
into their supply chains. Our large Enterprise customers are also increasingly
expecting state-of-the-art environmental practices from their suppliers. And
consumers increasingly want to know that their service providers are committed
to environmental best practices," explains Stéphane Boisvert, President of
Bell Enterprise Group. "Bell's ISO 14001 certification proves we are committed
to meeting our customers' expectations, and is a business differentiator
positioning us as the industry leader."
Bell's environmental management system provides a systematic framework
for the company to identify the environmental impact of its activities,
products and services. It also establishes commitments and targets, and
monitors results so Bell can continuously improve its performance.
"As Canada's largest communications company, we are acutely aware that
what we do today will affect future generations," Mr. Boisvert said. "We work
hard to make our environmental footprint as small as possible and strive to
continually improve our environmental performance in every facet of our
operations."
Bell has been a leader in environmental management since 1993 when it
began to develop a systematic approach to address environmental issues and
opportunities. Highlights of the company's efforts include:

    - More than 625,000 mobile phones have been recovered since 2003 in
Bell's award-winning Bell Blue Box program. The company donates a
dollar to WWF-Canada for each phone collected
    - More than 1.7 million Bell customers have adopted e-billing, which
contributes to saving more than 12,000 trees every year
    - Employees and customers held more than three million teleconferences in
2008, saving greenhouse gas emissions equal to 180,000 mid-size cars
      annually
    - Bell's three new campuses in Montréal, Mississauga and Calgary were
built according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
      classification standards for ecological buildings.
