Bell Aliant supports Minister's announcement on local telephone forbearance

SAINT JOHN, NB, April 4 /CNW/ - Bell Aliant announced today strong
support for the changes announced by Minister Bernier for the rules regulating
local telephone service.
"On behalf of all customers, we applaud the steps taken by this
government and the leadership of Minister Bernier to stimulate a competitive
environment where customer choice prevails over regulation," said Stephen
Wetmore, President and CEO of Bell Aliant. "Customers will benefit from
increased choice, more flexible offers and better value than was previously
available to them."
The changes being made include the removal of restrictions on the
offering of promotions and on contacting customers who have switched their
local service. Importantly, they also provide a more reasonable opportunity
for Bell Aliant to achieve forbearance from regulation, allowing our customers
to acquire products and services from the company of their choice at
competitive prices.
Bell Aliant intends to file local forbearance applications in the Halifax
area and numerous other qualifying areas throughout its territory as soon as
possible.
Bell Aliant was among a group of telecommunications companies that
appealed to the Federal Cabinet in May 2006 to change the rules for local
forbearance.
