Outstanding students recognized for academic excellence and community
    achievements

HALIFAX, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - Bell Aliant (TSX: BA.UN) is proud to announce
that 20 outstanding students have each been awarded a one-time $2,500
scholarship to support their first year of post-secondary studies. All
recipients are children or dependents of active or retired Bell Aliant
employees in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario.
"The future is ours to invest in and we are proud to award a total of
$50,000 this year to some of the most talented youth in our regions," said
Mike Roberts, vice-president of Human Resources, Bell Aliant. "The recipients
of the 2008-2009 Bell Aliant Scholarship Program clearly demonstrated that
they are the leaders of tomorrow and we congratulate them on their
achievements."
The scholarships were awarded in late September based on a number of
criteria including academic achievement and contributions to community.
"Our employees work tirelessly to serve our customers and many are also
busy parents raising families," said Roberts. "This program is an opportunity
to help them support the educational dreams of their children."
The Bell Aliant Scholarship Program was initially established in Atlantic
Canada in 2002 for dependents of employees and retirees. The program was
expanded to include regions of Ontario and Quebec when Bell Aliant was formed
in 2006.
The final scholarship recipients were selected by the Association of
Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) based on the criteria described
above. A complete list of this year's scholarship winners can be found on
