BACARDI BREEZER(R) Celebrates Summer with a Cleaner Environment



    
    Emissions saved with new packaging and carbon neutral zones equivalent to
    taking 200 cars off the road for a year
    

    TORONTO, July 2 /CNW/ - BACARDI BREEZER(R) invites Canadians(*) to share in
the excitement of the summer as it kicks off the season with new packaging and
eco-friendly initiatives. The popular summer beverage has made the switch from
glass to PET plastic bottles, keeping the consumer - and the environment - in
mind. While showcasing its new eco-friendly format, BREEZER will also be
demonstrating its commitment to living sustainably through carbon offsetting
activities at its 'Break-Free Zones' located at Virgin Festivals across
Canada.

    
    Escape from the Everyday with BREEZER and Virgin Festival
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    
    Each BREEZER Break-Free Zone is designed to provide attendees with a
mini-cottage getaway amid the busy Virgin Festival scene - complete with
seating, shade and refreshing samples of new Blackberry Lychee flavored
BREEZER. In an effort to live more sustainably, BREEZER is taking steps
towards environmental responsibility for these zones - reducing energy
consumption, reusing and recycling where possible. To encourage patrons to
recycle, BREEZER has also pegged a bright recycling idea - an illuminating
twist on the recycling box and an easy way to share messages with friends.
    BREEZER is committed to making these zones completely carbon neutral by
offsetting any emissions generated through the support of projects that reduce
the emissions of greenhouse-gases. Across Canada, 100 tonnes of CO(2) were
offset. Combined with the switch to PET plastic BREEZER has saved 1,232 tonnes
of greenhouse gas emissions - the equivalent of taking 200 cars off the road
for a year(1).
    "Everything we do generates carbon emissions which increase greenhouse
gases and ultimately impact our environment," says Bryce Conacher, Carbon
Management Consultant. "While it's not realistic to radically change the way
we work and play, we can follow BREEZER's lead and take responsibility for our
actions."
    Everything from the transportation of materials to the energy consumed on
site will be taken into consideration, and will be offset through the purchase
of carbon credits to support a tire recycling project in Quebec. This project
utilizes used car and truck tires to manufacture a variety of products that
include rubber carpets, car mats, new tires and an assortment of other
post-consumer goods. Most Canadians are reliant on items like tires and
beverage bottles in everyday life. By taking responsibility for these items by
recycling at the end of their lifespan consumers can reduce their eco and
carbon footprint significantly over time without radical changes to their
everyday life.

    
    BREEZER Breaks Free with PET
    ----------------------------
    
    As one of the first in the cooler category to launch its entire line-up
in PET plastic, BREEZER is committed to finding innovative ways to serve its
consumers. The new packaging is lighter in weight, shatter-resistant, and more
practical than its glass counterpart making it a more convenient alternative.
    "The switch to PET packaging is not only eco-friendly, but also
consumer-friendly," says Jennifer Semley, Assistant Brand Manager, Low Proof
Category, Bacardi Canada Inc. "Our research showed that consumers prefer
plastic over glass because of its convenience(2) and functionality. By
offering BREEZER in new PET plastic bottles, we are doing our part to help the
environment, while making it easier for Canadians to enjoy one of their
favourite beverages wherever their summer escape takes them."

    
    Eco-friendly Packaging
    ----------------------
    
    The switch to the lightweight material helps cut fuel costs, therefore
conserving emissions, and saving energy and resources such as oil and gas.
This switch means that BREEZER will be reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25
per cent in just one year. This reduction is the equivalent of taking more
than 150(3) cars off the road - which translates to more than 3,000,000
kilometres of driving. That's equivalent to 410 trips between Victoria,
British Columbia and St. John's Newfoundland(4)! Additionally, PET plastic is
renowned for its re-usability in materials like polar fleece, carpets and
re-usable shopping bags.
