August Housing Starts in Halifax

HALIFAX, Sept. 9 /CNW/ - Residential construction activity in Halifax
increased last month compared to August 2008. According to Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data(1) released today for Halifax,
there were 229 total housing starts last month, compared with 123 in August
2008.
Overall starts were bolstered by a sharp rise in multiple starts which
increased from 23 in August 2008 to 146 last month. With 83 units,
single-detached starts saw the lowest monthly decrease of the year at 17 per
cent.
"The large increase in residential construction last month was due to the
start of 130 apartment-style units in Halifax," said Matthew Gilmore, senior
market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "The start of some new
apartments and the slower rate of decline in single starts are reflective of
near record employment and wage levels in the city," added Gilmore.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in August were down
27 per cent to 12,187 units compared to last year's monthly total of 16,807.
Single-detached starts were down 26 per cent to 5,211 units, while multiple
starts were down 28 per cent in August to 6,976 units compared to 9,744 units
during the same period last year. In the Atlantic region, 835 new units were
started in August compared to 879 units in August 2008.
As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of
experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally
sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and
up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and
