STORY SUMMARY: One in three Canadians believe socially responsible
investing is more important today than it was five years ago, according to new
research from Investors Group.
The survey found that a majority (56 per cent) of Canadians believe
environmental considerations are important when choosing responsible
investments. Other factors ranked as important by Canadians when making
socially responsible investment decisions include prohibitions against:
alcohol or tobacco investments (42 per cent); weapons (53 per cent); child
labour (79 per cent) and poor human rights practices (70 per cent).
"Increasingly, investment decisions are less a conflict between
profitability and social and environmental responsibility," said Dan McClure,
Vice President and Portfolio Manager with Investors Group. "Companies that are
strong in these areas are, by and large, well managed companies that represent
a strong investment opportunity."
Investors Group launched one of Canada's first socially responsible funds
in 1987. The fund family now includes the Investors Summa SRI Fund(TM),
Canada's largest socially responsible investing fund; and the newly launched
Investors Summa Global SRI Fund and Investors Summa Global Environmental
Leaders Fund.
