MONTREAL, May 27, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Astral Radio, a division of Astral
Media Inc. (TSX: ACM.A ACM.B), addressed the Canadian Radio-Television
and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) last week to reaffirm the
compliance of its radio formats broadcast on its stations' airwaves
with regard to the radio policy on French-language music content.
Before the CRTC, Astral Radio specified that its music formats have been
broadcast in the same manner on the NRJ network for over a decade and
that these works created by DJs allow stations to set themselves apart.
Moreover, these formats—in response to requests from listeners who are
huge fans of such works—also help measure public receptiveness to
different music formats.
Astral also seized the opportunity to encourage the Commission to
consider holding a hearing to revise its commercial radio policy with
regard to the major shift in tastes and music listening habits in
recent years of Québecers who are drawn to world and English-language
music more than ever before.
"Astral radio stations take great pride in promoting French-language
artists on the air, while appealing to the constantly evolving tastes
of all our listeners," said Charles Benoit, Executive Vice President,
Astral Radio. "In that regard, we agree that it would now be
appropriate to review rules for French-language music quotas within the
framework of a hearing focused on revising the commercial radio policy.
Astral is committed to proposing practical pointers to ensure the
perenniality and health of the Québec and Canadian radio and music
