ASC Confirms Temporary Short Selling Ban Will Expire



    CALGARY, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) confirms
that its temporary order prohibiting short sales of certain financial sector
securities will expire at 11:59 pm on October 8, 2008.
    The temporary ban under the Securities Act (Alberta) originally was made
on September 19, 2008, following a United States Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) order. The ASC order is available for review on the ASC
website: www.albertasecurities.com.

    The ASC is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the
province's securities laws. It is entrusted to foster a fair and efficient
capital market in Alberta and to protect investors. As a member of the
Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and
harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
