April Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, May 8 /CNW/ - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data(1), residential construction in April
produced a total of 156 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres compared to
153 units during the same period last year.
"Total urban starts for the month of April were just ahead of last year's
monthly level due to a significant year-over-year increase in multiple starts
in Fredericton," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New
Brunswick. A total of 104 multiple starts were recorded in April of 2009 in
all urban centres compared to 69 units during the same month last year.
Single starts in provincial urban centres were down 38.1 per cent in
April with a 32-unit decline for a total of 52 starts. "Single starts, which
have trailed last year's pace since the start of the year remained soft in
April as reduced demand led to fewer starts," continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in April declined by
53 per cent, down to 8,063 compared to last year's total of 17,209.
Single-detached starts decreased 49 per cent to 3,526 units, while multiple
unit starts were down 56 per cent from 10,321 units last year to 4,537 units
this year. In the Atlantic region, 369 new units were started in April 2009
compared to 533 units during the same period in 2008.
As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of
experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally
sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant
and healthy communities and cities across the country.
