Appointments to Via Rail Canada Inc.



    OTTAWA, Dec. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of
Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointments of
Ms. Wendy King, Mr. Leo Housakos and Mr. William M. Wheatley to the board of
directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc.
    "I am pleased that these individuals have agreed to serve on the board of
VIA Rail Canada Inc.," said Minister Cannon. "I am confident that their
combined experience will be a great asset to the board of VIA Rail, which
provides a vital service to link our communities."
    Ms. King is a lawyer in Vancouver with extensive experience in corporate,
commercial and tax law. Currently senior legal counsel with Weyerhaeuser
Company Limited, she holds a master of laws degree in international tax law
from the University of London, as well as a dual master's degree in business
administration from Columbia University and the University of California at
Berkeley. Ms. King has been appointed to the board for a period of four years.
    Mr. Housakos lives in Montreal, where he has worked in public relations,
strategic planning and marketing for many years. He has a bachelor's degree in
political science and history from McGill University. Mr. Housakos has been
appointed to the board for four years.
    Mr. Wheatley is chief compliance officer, secretary and general counsel
for Greystone Capital Management Inc. He earned a bachelor of laws degree from
the University of Saskatchewan and later was active in private practice. He
also has experience with the Saskatchewan Securities Commission and lives in
Regina. Mr. Wheatley has been appointed to the board for two years.

    VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates
Canada's national passenger rail service. The board of directors is
responsible for overseeing the business activities and other affairs of the
corporation.
