OTTAWA, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of
Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the
appointments of Mr. Brad Caldwell and Dr. Trevor Jain to the
Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada (TATC).
"I'm very pleased that these distinguished professionals have agreed to
serve on the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada," said Minister
Strahl. "Their vast experience in the transportation, legal and medical
fields will be tremendous assets to the tribunal."
Mr. Caldwell holds a bachelor of laws degree from the University of
Victoria Law School and an advanced mediation certificate. He practised
law since his admission to the British Columbia bar in 1986, with an
emphasis on maritime and fisheries litigation, general commercial
litigation and administrative law. Prior to his legal career, Mr.
Caldwell gained practical experience in the marine industry as a
fisherman, deckhand, commercial diver and longshoreman. His
professional associations include the Canadian Maritime Law
Association, the Law Society of British Columbia and the Marine
Insurance Association of British Columbia. Mr. Caldwell has been
appointed to the TATC for a term of three years.
Dr. Jain holds a bachelor of science degree in biology and computer
science from Acadia University as well as a medical degree from
Dalhousie University, and pursued further studies in medicine at the
University of Ottawa and Queen's University. He is currently an
attending physician in emergency medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and serves as coroner for the
Prince Edward Island Department of Justice and Public Safety. Dr. Jain
has served as a family physician, a clinical director for a NATO
hospital unit in Bosnia and as a pathology operations officer for the
Swissair 111 accident investigation. He has flown commercial aircraft
and was an infantry officer with the Department of National Defence.
His professional affiliations include the Canadian Association of
Emergency Physicians, the Canadian College of Family Physicians, the
Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Owners and Pilots
Association. Dr. Jain has been appointed to the TATC for a term of four
The TATC provides an independent review process for anyone who has been
given notice of an administrative or enforcement action taken by the
Minister of Transport, railway safety inspectors or the Canadian
Transportation Agency under various federal transportation acts.
