OTTAWA, June 25 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment
of Mr. Denis Durand to the board of directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc. for a
term of four years.
"I am pleased that Mr. Durand has agreed to serve on the board of
directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc.," said Minister Cannon. "His extensive
experience in finance, communications and business will serve the board well
in the future."
Mr. Durand holds both a bachelor's and master's degree in economics from
Université Laval. After completing this education, Mr. Durand joined the
Government of Quebec in increasingly important roles ranging from economist to
industry analyst, specializing in investment. Mr. Durand subsequently joined
the firm of Jarislowsky Fraser Ltd. as a manager and associate, and next
worked for five years with Gentrust Investment Counsellors, where he was
president and investment director. He launched an international fund and the
first stock savings plan fund. In 1993, he returned to Jarislowsky Fraser Ltd.
as a partner.
Mr. Durand sits on the boards of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and of Care
Canada, where he is vice-chairman of the board and chairman of the audit
committee. He was the founding treasurer of the Quebec economists'
association, ASDEQ, chairman of Cercle Finance Placements and a director of
Groupe Forex Inc.
VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates
Canada's national passenger rail service. The board of directors is
