OTTAWA, June 27 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment
of Mr. Charlie Oliver of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the board
of directors of the St. John's Port Authority for a term of three years.
"I am delighted that Mr. Oliver has agreed to serve on the board of the
St. John's Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "His experience in business
will be of great value to the port authority."
Mr. Oliver graduated from Memorial University in St. John's in 1974 with
a bachelor of commerce. In 1988, he was awarded the designation of certified
commercial investment member (CCIM) in commercial real estate. Over the course
of his career, he has founded, operated and sold various businesses in areas
such as offshore supply, fitness, retail and manufacturing. Currently he is
the owner of Martek Morgan Finch, the largest real estate management company
in Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Oliver has been a director of the St. John's
Real Estate Board and the St. John's Board of Trade. He is presently national
chair of the Canadian Condominium Institute.
The St. John's Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA)
established to manage the Port of St. John's under the Canada Marine Act. As a
CPA, the St. John's Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
The Port of St. John's handles about 1.5 million tonnes of cargo
annually. Its facilities handle a variety of ships, including bulk carriers,
roll-on/roll-off vessels, forest products carriers, container ships, tankers
and conventional cargo vessels.
