TORONTO, March 27 /CNW/ - Soloists and public school choirs from across
the GTA and surrounding areas showed their pride and sang their hearts out
yesterday at the Real Canadian Anthem Search finals, a competition offering
kids a chance to sing the national anthem at Air Canada Centre. Loblaw
Companies Limited, in conjunction with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto
Raptors, sponsored this great opportunity.
Of the 16 finalists, Toronto's John G. Althouse won the choir category
and Thornhill's Dia Dibartolomeo, 16 years of age, was chosen as the winning
The Toronto public school choir will perform at the Raptors game on
April 13th and has won $3000 for their music program and a catered breakfast
for the entire school. Dibartolomeo will sing at the Leafs game on April 3rd
and receives $1000 in prizes and $2000 to be donated to the charity of her
"I can't even put into words how happy I am," says Dibartolomeo. To
prepare for the big night she says she's going to "practice every day and try
to concentrate on the singing rather than the fact that I'll be performing in
front of thousands of people."
The event was held at RBK court in Air Canada Centre with Jennifer
Podemski of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" as the emcee for the afternoon.
Finalists were judged by a panel of well-known Canadian celebrities and music
industry VIPs including Canadian Idol winner Melissa O'Neil, "Degrassi: The
Next Generation" star Lauren Collins, former "Rockstar: INXS" contestant and
singer-songwriter Tara Slone, Disney Power Ranger Matt Austin, Nicole Stamp,
host of TVOntario's "Reach For The Top" and "TVOKids: The SPACE", and Lisa
Whynot from EMI Music Canada. Performances were marked on intonation, vocal
clarity, enthusiasm and overall presentation.
The winning choir and soloist videos will be posted online March 28 at

Sports & Entertainment, the competition included a category for choir groups
from grades 6 - 8 and soloists from 13 to 19 years of age. In order to advance
to the finals, choirs took part in two days of regional competitions and
soloists entered by uploading their video at www.superstore.ca or auditioning
in-person at select Ontario Superstores.
