Aliant Presenting Sponsor for Canoe '09 - Investing in Atlantic Canada sport

HALIFAX, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading communications
and information technology provider will be the Presenting Sponsor for the
2009 International Canoe Federation's World Senior Canoe Championships
(Canoe '09). Aliant has committed their support for the Championships next
summer and for the construction of a new world class training facility-the
Aliant Racing Centre.
Aliant will present the August 12-16, 2009 competition on Lake Banook in
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia featuring the world's elite canoe and kayakers from
over 90 countries. The Championships are also expected to draw more than
100,000 spectators to Halifax and more than two million television viewers,
providing an excellent opportunity to showcase Nova Scotia to the world.
Nova Scotia's department of Health Promotion and Protection and Halifax
Regional Municipality have also made significant financial contributions to
ensure the success of this event.
"Aliant is proud to be supporting Canoe '09. This is a natural fit for
Aliant, and builds on our existing commitments to athletes throughout Atlantic
Canada," said Joe Mosher, Aliant's Vice-President of Residential Marketing.
"Canoe '09 will provide a world stage for our talented Atlantic Canadian
paddlers and the new Aliant Racing Centre will ensure that Atlantic Canadian
paddlers have access to a world class, high performance training facility."
The Aliant Racing Centre located on Lake Banook, Dartmouth was created
out of a collaborative effort with many community and government partners. The
Centre will be the first of its kind in Canada specific to the training and
excellence of canoe/kayak. Additionally, this facility will house a
state-of-the-art starting system which will be used at the 2009 Championships.
Aliant's support on this project will leave a lasting legacy for canoe and
kayak in Atlantic Canada.
"The Centre, along with the course improvements on Lake Banook, will help
Canoe '09 ensure that the World Championships are a successful event, locally
and internationally," said Canoe '09 chair Chris Keevill. "The improvements
will help solidify Canada's reputation as a leader in the sport of canoe and
kayak and will support Atlantic Division Canoe Kayak Canada and the Society
for Canoe Championships in future bids for national and international
competitions."
