Aliant launches public awareness and education campaign to mark global Safer Internet Day

    ST. JOHN'S, NL, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading
communications and information technology provider, today announced it is
launching a public awareness and education campaign in conjunction with global
Safer Internet Day - February 12 - as supported by Cybertip.ca, Canada's
tipline dedicated to keeping children safe online.
"The Internet is a fantastic tool for kids to learn, share and play, but
because it's a public space, it also carries with it certain risks," said
Heather Tulk, Aliant's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "Aliant is uniquely
positioned to help parents and educators manage this environment through our
security software and our community programs that inform parents and help
protect children online."
Each year global Safer Internet Day is recognized on the second Tuesday
of February to promote Internet safety for children around the world. The
primary purpose is to educate parents and encourage them to be more aware
about their children's activities online and to talk to their children about
ways to stay safe. Approximately 40 countries participate in recognizing and
promoting Safer Internet Day and dedicate time to raise awareness of online
safety issues.
For over a decade, Aliant has been working to keep kids safe online by
offering customers a host of security solutions like Parental Control, and
through its ongoing partnerships with organizations like Kids Help Phone.
Aliant also works closely with local law enforcement to educate parents about
Internet safety.
"Keeping our children safe online is an area of great and growing concern
for law enforcement," said Deputy Chief of Police William Brown of the Royal
Newfoundland Constabulary. "We welcome collaborative efforts with leaders like
Aliant, whose expertise helps us keep pace with the changing nature of the
Internet and new technologies."
Aliant's partnership with Cybertip.ca is a significant boost for
awareness in Atlantic Canada, said Signy Arnason, Director of Cybertip.ca.
"Aliant reached out to us to offer their support to spread our message.
They're bringing all of their resources to bear to educate people about
staying safe online. This significant investment means more people in Atlantic
Canada will be informed about online safety than ever before."
