MONTREAL, Sept. 25 /CNW Telbec/ - Alcan announced today that it will
donate US$50,000 via the Canadian Red Cross, in response to a September 17
emergency appeal by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies (Red Cross), to aid victims of recent flooding in the Upper East
Region of Ghana. The donation will be used for relief needs such as shelter,
food, water, sanitation, health and other supplies and services.
"Alcan is committed to offering its support at this time of overwhelming
need because it is quite simply the right thing to do," said Jacynthe Côté,
President and CEO of Alcan Bauxite and Alumina. "We have enjoyed a
mutually-beneficial relationship with Ghana for over 60 years and many of its
people are currently in desperate need of help," Côté continued. "With this
donation, we will increase the Red Cross' capacity to deliver immediate relief
and will contribute to Ghana's longer-term recovery efforts," she concluded.
"Alcan's support will help the Red Cross provide immediate humanitarian
assistance to the people affected by the disaster in Ghana," said François
Couillard, Deputy Secretary General and Chief Operating Officer of the
Canadian Red Cross. "Donations from companies such as Alcan go a long way
towards ensuring that we can respond more effectively in such situations," he
continued. "We thank Alcan for its generosity."

the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Ghana for the creation of a
