Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, Cornwall RCMP, and CBSA continue enforcement operations on contraband tobacco distribution



    CORNWALL, ON, Aug. 1 /CNW/ - Four (4) investigations pursuant to the
Excise Act 2001, have been conducted by law enforcement partners in the
Cornwall, Ontario area over the past week. These investigations have resulted
in the seizure of 750,000 illegal cigarettes, 402 kg of fine cut tobacco and
four vehicles with the value of the seizures estimated at $134,150.00.
    Charged for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped
according to the Excise Act 2001, are two men from Martintown aged 44 and 18
years old, a 44 year old Cornwall woman, a 29 year old Ottawa man and a
21 year old Kanawake woman, who will appear in Cornwall Provincial Court.
    These investigations were conducted in relation to vehicles departing
Cornwall Island and it is believed that the cigarettes were manufactured in
the United States and smuggled into Canada. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police
Service continue their efforts with their policing partners to reduce crime
within their territory.
    Law enforcement agencies continue to share resources and work
collaboratively to ensure our communities remain safe from suspicious
activities. Public safety remains our highest priority.
