VICTORIA, May 11 /CNW/ - Air Canada Captain Glen Baxby is abandoning his
wings to hit the pavement and raise funds for cancer this summer. The
cross-country bike trip, which departs from Victoria, BC on May 15, will take
two months and span more than 7,000 miles.
A novice cyclist who began training in January, Baxby decided to make the
trek after close friend and fellow pilot Captain Scott Lyon was diagnosed with
a rare form of cancer after he returned from a flight last fall feeling more
than the usual jet lag. Twenty-five years ago, Lyon was the inspiration for
Baxby to become a pilot.
"I just couldn't sit by and do nothing," says Baxby, 46. "I thought long
and hard about how I could support Scott and his courageous journey and
decided to make a journey of my own."
Together, Lyon, Baxby and a grassroots committee called Coast2Coast2Cure
have established The Lyon's Share Contribution Fund to ensure that every step
of Baxby's journey will allow people across Canada to donate to cancer
research and treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital, where Lyon is undergoing
treatment. To date, the www.coast2coast2cure.com blog has raised over $16,000,
with a goal of $500,000 over the summer.
An itinerary of Baxby's planned route, which will include a stopover in
Lyon's home town of Barrie, is posted on the blog, which updates Baxby's
progress daily. Air Canada pilots and Coast2coast2cure volunteers will travel
alongside Baxby on cycles and in a support vehicle. Air Canada has offered
Baxby the time off to complete the ride, which will finish in Signal Hill,
NFLD, in July.
According to Baxby, there is an urgent need for cancer funding and
awareness. During 2008, 166,400 new cases of cancer and 73,800 deaths from
cancer were estimated to occur in Canada. Thirty per cent of these cases and
18% of deaths occur in young and middle aged adults 20 - 59.

About Coast2Coast2Cure: Coast2coast2cure is a grassroots charity that is
raising funds to support The Lyon's Share Contribution Fund for cancer
research and treatment. The cornerstone of the group's fundraising efforts is
a 7,000 bike ride across Canada by Air Canada Pilot Glen Baxby.
Coast2coast2cure has also planned a series of fundraising events, including a
comedy night, car wash, street party and golf tournament. To donate to the
fund, sponsor Baxby's ride or find out more about the group's activities,
