Ambassador accepts delivery of 280 wheelchairs
VANCOUVER, April 5 /CNW/ - Wheelchair Foundation Canada (WFC) welcomed
Afghan Ambassador to Canada Omar Samad to Vancouver yesterday in recognition
of the United Nations International Day of Mine Awareness.
During his visit, Christiana Flessner, Executive Director of WFC,
presented the Ambassador with a wheelchair, symbolic of a larger delivery of
280 new wheelchairs (valued at over $168,000) to be delivered to disabled
Afghan citizens in Kabul. The wheelchairs were sponsored by members of the
B.C. Knights of Columbus, and are the second such delivery in recent months.
This past January, WFC, with the assistance of the Canadian military,
distributed over 500 wheelchairs (sponsored by B.C. Rotarians) to Afghans in
need in Kandahar.
"We are pleased to assist in raising awareness of the terrible crisis of
landmines facing Afghanistan and many other countries. While the removal of
existing landmines is of paramount importance, it is important to remember
that many have already had their lives devastatingly affected" remarked
Flessner. "In Afghanistan, two in ten adult men have already lost legs; a
wheelchair can help them regain their lives in an immediate and tangible way.
WFC is incredibly proud to have witnessed the exceptional compassion and
generosity shown by the citizens of Canada, and is pleased to have been able
to facilitate the expression of this caring".
Wheelchair Foundation Canada (WFC) is an independent charitable
organization, involved in an international effort to create awareness of the
needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities, to promote the joy
of giving, create global friendship, and to deliver a wheelchair to every
child, teen and adult in the world that needs one, but cannot afford one. For
