QUEBEC CITY, Oct. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - In early October, Steven
Remorquage inc. and its director Steven Cloran, the director of Clinique
dentaire Tuong-Van, Tuong-Van Huynh-Bao, Orderin inc. and its director Marouf
Mousa, as well as Délices de Chine restaurant and its director Gerry Lee were
all ordered to pay fines varying between $850 and $1,700 for having refused to
provide the register of wages of their employees. The enterprises and
directors in question operate in the Montréal and Laval regions.
In refusing to provide the register of wages of their employees, a
requirement that the Act respecting labour standards imposes on all employers,
these enterprises are impeding the work of the Commission des normes du
travail which does not have the means to check if those employees having filed
a complaint have indeed received all of the sums to which they are entitled.
It should be recalled that employers must keep for a three-year period a
registration system or a register, which notably includes the number of hours
worked per day and per week for each employee.
The Commission des normes du travail oversees compliance with the Act
"The Commission favours prevention with employers and employees and
promotes their awareness about compliance with the Act. This approach has
borne fruit since the majority of employers comply with the Act. However, the
Commission must take more coercive measures against a minority of employers
who violate the Act and who engage in unfair competition. These actions seek
to better protect employees and to encourage employers to comply with the
