Acier Leroux - Pre-retirement Gains for Workers

AMOS, QC, Sept. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - Eighty percent of Steelworkers at Acier
Leroux in Amos, Abitibi accepted a new three-year collective agreement
yesterday. In addition to wage hikes on the order of 7.5%, the employer's
share of contributions to the Fonds de solidarité FTQ was raised and a
pre-retirement program negotiated. "Wages were not the key issue in these
negotiations. The workers wanted better retirement conditions, and they have
achieved their objectives," asserted Gaétan Lyrette, a union staffer with the
Syndicat des Métallos (FTQ).
The current average wage rate is $20.50 per hour. Increases of $0.52
hourly will be applied to each of the three years in the term of this
employment contract. Trainers of the machine workforce in the plant will
receive an extra $0.75 hourly. This clause was not part of the previous
collective agreement.
A new pre-retirement program was also introduced. Workers who are
60 years of age or age 50 with 25 years' seniority will be allowed to work a
four-day week. Management has committed to pay 4% of gross earnings into the
Fonds de solidarité FTQ on behalf of these employees, who will not be required
to contribute a matching amount in order to maintain their eligibility. For
all other workers, the employer's contribution to the Fonds de solidarité FTQ
will be an amount equivalent to the workers' contribution, to a maximum of 4%.
This facility specializes in bending, cutting and the sale of iron
components.
