OTTAWA, May 10 /CNW/ - A record 1.5 million dollars was raised by hikers
who participated in 100 different hikes across Canada in support of
Hospice Palliative Care during the 9th Annual Hike for Hospice
Palliative Care which took place on Sunday, May 1st.
Support for the 2011 Hike for Hospice Palliative Care continued to grow,
with participants including Federal and Provincial Members of
Parliament, municipal leaders and celebrities, such as Olympian Jared
MacLeod, who was this year's guest of honour at the Hike in Sudbury, ON
and Rob Cote, #26 of the Calgary Stampeders Football club, who
celebrated his 3rd year as Hospice Calgary's (AB) Hike ambassador.
In Red Deer, AB $20,000.00 was raised in honour of a hospice resident
who died just a few days after the hike. In Quebec, one hike site
raised a record $200,000.00 in support of their local programs and
overall close to $1 million dollars was raised through the National
on-line hike website.
For many, the Hike is a way to remember and honor friends and family
members. In Calgary, AB, a Hiker honours her mother through Lorrie's
Legacy which was created in 2009 and has since raised $4,000.00 for
Hospice Calgary. Many hike sites also enjoyed barbeques, silent
auctions, face painting and live music. Even in Manitoba, hikers
remained undeterred by a spring blizzard.
The next Hike for Hospice is planned for May 6, 2012 and will be the
Hike for Hospice 10th Anniversary. Organizations interested in hosting
a hike may contact the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association by
phone at 1-800-668-2785 or by e-mail at email@example.com.
Organized as a national event, with Honorary Chair Peter Mansbridge,
each Hike is hosted locally and 100% of the much-needed funds that are
raised remain in support of their local communities.
Hike for Hospice Palliative Care is coordinated by the Canadian Hospice
Palliative Care Association, the national association which provides
leadership in hospice palliative and end-of-life care. Funding for the
Hike is provided by its founding sponsor, The GlaxoSmithKline
Foundation and through the support of Bayshore Home Health.
