of Canada congratulating the people of Lithuania on the recent election of
As Canada's Minister of State for the Status of Women, I am delighted to
extend heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the Government of Canada to
the people of the Republic of Lithuania on the historic election of the
first woman President of Lithuania. Dr. Dalia Grybauskaite's landslide
victory on May 17, 2009 - the largest margin to date - represents a
momentous leap forward for the people of Lithuania and the Baltic States
and a triumph for women throughout the world.
Dr. Grybauskaite has been preparing herself for a leading role for many
years. When she takes office on July 12, she will call upon her
experiences as a visionary political leader, senior bureaucrat and
academic. She will also call upon her working class roots and her early
years as a factory worker and secretary.
Currently serving as European Commissioner for Financial Programming and
Budget, Dr. Grybauskaite has been a fearless proponent for
competitiveness through research and development. In 2005, she was
granted the award of "Commissioner of the Year."
The Government of Canada is committed to advancing equality for women. We

to the House of Commons. Today we celebrate another milestone for women
