MONTREAL, Dec. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - Centraide of Greater Montreal's annual
fundraising campaign finished on a successful note today after raising
$54,003,552. That's $2.5 million more than last year, and well above the goal
announced at the launch of the campaign on October 1. The proceeds will be
used to support 360 community agencies that help 500,000 vulnerable people in
Centraide Campaign 2007 was co-chaired by Norman M. Steinberg, Co-Chair
of Ogilvy Renault LLP, and Thierry Vandal, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec.
"This campaign shows that the values of caring and sharing are deeply rooted
in our community. By giving from the heart, donors have ensured that Centraide
will be able to help people all year long," said Mr. Steinberg. "Today's
result is proof of incredible generosity! It keeps alive the flame of hope and
solidarity in Greater Montreal," added Mr. Vandal.
"Thank you to the 175,000 donors who placed their confidence in us, and
to our 22,000 volunteers for their colossal support," said Michèle
Thibodeau-DeGuire, President and Executive Director of Centraide of Greater
Montreal. "They've made it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to
keep moving forward on the road to dignity. Thanks to the involvement of
thousands of companies, of their generous employees, of the trade unions and
of the general public, the community agencies we support will be able to
continue fighting poverty."
The growing gap between rich and poor, social exclusion, mental illness,
school dropout, the poverty rate of single parent families and social
isolation are all complex problems that need to be addressed. Centraide
analyses social issues and needs in neighbourhoods. It supports community
agencies that provide lasting solutions for vulnerable families and
individuals by promoting their empowerment, building their self-esteem and
developing their skills.
Centraide of Greater Montreal is an independent organization managed by a
board of directors which is representative of the community. It serves the
Island of Montreal, Laval, and communities on the South Shore. Centraide
supports agencies and projects that promote self-help and mutual-aid, are
active in their community, and together will have a long-term impact on the
Greater Montreal community. There are 18 autonomous Centraides in Quebec, each
managed by an independent board of directors which is representative of the
community it serves.
The goal of Centraide Campaign 2007 was to raise $53 million.
