A Million Stories Well Told

Web-based theatre company uses new tech to tell classic tales

HAMILTON, ON, Aug. 12 /CNW/ - When Toronto writer-actor Gregg Taylor
turned his small production company away from the greasepaint and empty chairs
of independent theatre for the much bigger room of the internet, he didn't
know what to expect. This month, as Decoder Ring Theatre prepares to launch
its fifth season of original audio drama releases, the company is celebrating
another milestone: the One Millionth Download from the company's podcast feed.
"The changing face of technology brings a lot of challenges for the
creative community." Taylor says "But audiences aren't shrinking, they're
turning elsewhere for entertainment. We moved with them, and it's been a
fantastic ride."
Taylor's ensemble uses Podcasting to breathe new life into a classic
storytelling form; full-cast mystery and adventure programs as they haven't
been heard since the golden age of radio, but for listeners with iPods rather
than tube radios.
The most popular episodes have been the continuing exploits of the masked
protectors of Depression-era Toronto in "The Red Panda Adventures" and the
noir detective series "Black Jack Justice". Listeners around Canada, the
United States, Australia and the U.K have spread the word and helped Decoder
Ring to expand their reach, and chipped in to help the company meet expenses.
"There is a real power to audio drama." Taylor says "It gives us an
opportunity to reach our audience on their terms, and we've been thrilled with
the passion they have shown us in return."
A year ago Taylor and his wife Clarissa moved the company down the
highway to Hamilton, Ontario, but the players they had assembled through years
in the trenches of independent theatre still make the trek for regular
recording sessions, augmented by new, local performers. "Our whole crew brings
their passion and excitement for the enterprise, it really is a family affair
for us. We could have easily worked our entire lives and never come close to
telling our stories a million times. Now here we are, and there's no end in
sight."
