New Democrat television ads will be running after the writ is dropped on
Now that that burning issue is out of the way: Can the Premier answer
Andrea's letter on debates?
It's attached since you seem to have lost it.
TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2011 /CNW/ -
Dear Messrs. McGuinty and Hudak:
Leaders' debates play a key role in our democracy and are central to our
electoral system. These debates are able to give people a clear sense
of what politicians and their parties stand for, cutting through the
attack advertisements and negative tactics that often define election
Ontario has only one scheduled debate, meaning that people only have one
opportunity to hear directly from their potential Premier on the
serious issues affecting their lives. I think this is a missed
opportunity. In a speech to the Rotary Club earlier this month I called
for three debates, focussing specifically on healthcare, jobs and the
economy, and energy policy. Since then, I've heard proposals from
Liberal MPPs to have a debate on education issues and I think that
would be exciting and worthy. Ideally, these debates should take place
in different regions of the province. I know that people in Northern
Ontario, for example, would appreciate the opportunity to see their
concerns reflected in the election discussion.
I recognize that this would depart with tradition, but I believe it is
needed in a time when our airwaves are filled with reasons not to vote.
Compared to other jurisdictions, this move wouldn't be out of the
ordinary - there are three debates in the U.S. and British elections.
I urge you to consider this proposal and I look forward to hearing your
Andrea Horwath, MPP
