A First in Québec: Some Medical Residents in Internal Medicine and Paediatrics Can Obtain a Temporary Permit to Practise

MONTREAL, June 28 /CNW Telbec/ - The President and Chief Executive
Officer of the Collège des médecins du Québec, Dr. Yves Lamontagne, announced
today that the professional order of physicians will be issuing temporary
permits to medical residents in internal medicine and paediatrics who request
them provided that they meet certain conditions.
"Among other requirements," indicated Dr. Lamontagne at a press
conference held today, "medical residents who have completed four years of
training in their specialties and passed their Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada exam will be able to lend their medical colleagues a
helping hand. Thus, they will help free up the health system and assure that
the Quebec population receives the health services to which it is entitled."
This Québec first was made possible thanks to a collaborative effort
between the Fédération des médecins résidents du Québec and the Fédération des
médecins spécialistes du Québec. "In implementing this move," explained
Dr. Yves Robert, Secretary of the Collège des médecins, "we are following in
the footsteps of other Canadian provinces. It is quite reasonable to offer
temporary permits to physicians who have completed their general training in a
specialty and passed their exams for the period in which they are completing
their subspecialty."
This additional step that the Collège has taken in order to improve the
health system comes on the heels of a series of actions it has been working on
implementing over the past few months to find effective solutions to the
problems confronting the province's health system. In that regard, a number of
the health network's partners have already confirmed their intention to attend
the Collège's upcoming Health Summit. "The Collège reiterates that it is
crucial to go beyond the existing parameters in order to obtain a more
reliable organization to ensure the well-being of the population," concluded
Dr. Lamontagne.

The Collège des médecins du Québec is the province's professional order
of physicians. The mission of the Collège is to promote quality medicine in
order to protect the public and help improve the health of Quebecers.
