    TORONTO, Jan. 7 /CNW/ - The countdown to television's hottest season
premiere kicked off yesterday as nine lucky Canadian viewers took their seats
in 'The Fan Bunker', each with the chance to make history. Selected by Virgin
Radio and Global Television, the adventurous crew is attempting to set a new
Guinness Book world record by consecutively watching seasons 1 - 6 of 24. With
the first 24 hours now under their belt, the one who succeeds in breaking the
record will also walk away with the grand prize of $24,000 in cash.
    The day began at Yorkdale Mall with a 'mission briefing' at 3PM by ET
Canada's own Rick Campanelli, and the race was then officially on.
    "From the scope and excitement of the environment to the unbelieveable
determination of the contestants, this event truly defines what 24 is all
about," said Jamie Schouela, VP, Marketing Strategy, Global Television.
    The contestants, four females and five males, ages ranging from 20 to 47,
include a married mother of two, three students and one intrepid reporter,
Murtz Jaffer of The National Post and host of the hit TV show Reality
Obsessed.
    The Guinness Record will be officially broken if one or more of the
finalists holds on until after 6:33pm EST this Friday, January 9th. After that
the race for the cash is on. However, everyone will go home a winner as
secondary prizing will be awarded during the course of the event when certain
milestones are achieved. For example:

    
    -   After 24 hours of continual viewing, each contestant has now won
        their La-Z-boy Recliner.
    -   After 36 hours of continual viewing during the Event, each contestant
        that remains will receive one a Sharp Blu-ray DVD Player.
    -   After 48 hours of continual viewing during the Event, each contestant
        will be awarded with a 19" Sharp AQUOS LCD television.

    This groundbreaking contest will be supplemented with a strong four-week
on-air campaign which was launched mid December in the Season finale of
Survivor: Gabon. Off-air media includes radio the week of launch, tactical
print, outdoor, IPG, and online in Toronto.

    Fun Facts and Rules:
    -   The previous record holder for Continuous TV Watching was clocked in
        at 69 hours and 48 minutes.
    -   Adhering to Guinness guidelines, contestants will be allowed only a
        15 minute break every 3 hours.
    -   During the marathon, contestants are not allowed to avert their eyes
        from the television screen.
    -   Total running time of all six seasons - 106 hours and 41 minutes
    -   No energy pills, drinks or aids of any kind, aside for coffee, are
        permitted
    

    24 Season 7 begins with a 2-night, 4-hour premiere starting Sunday,
January 11 - 8pm ET/PT on Global. The premiere concludes the following evening
on Monday, January 12 - 8pm ET/PT.
    Subsequent episodes of 24 will broadcast Mondays - 9pm ET/PT, starting
January 19.
