57 Boys and Girls Club Youth are Awarded the Opportunity to Achieve their Academic Dreams as Recipients of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships

MARKHAM, ON, June 19 /CNW/ - Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Future
Shop have opened the door for 57 youth from across Canada to realize their
academic potential by presenting them with Future Shop Future Leaders
Scholarships. These scholarships will provide the recipients with $4,000
towards the September 2009 school term to assist with the cost of
post-secondary education.
"Giving back is a part of our culture, and we're proud of the
opportunities the scholarships create every year for the Boys and Girls Clubs'
youth," said Cheryl Grant, Community Relations Manager, Future Shop. "After
nine years of providing scholarships, we understand the value the scholarships
bring to the individual recipients to succeed in their next level of
education, and in their future impact in our communities."
Each student is provided with a $3,500 or $3,000 cash award along with a
$500 or $1,000 Future Shop gift card to ensure they have all the tools for
academic success. This is the ninth year Future Shop has partnered with Boys
and Girls Clubs of Canada in realizing the importance of a quality education
for future success. To date, nearly 500 scholarships have been awarded to
deserving youth leaders from all across Canada totaling more than $1.5
million.
The cost of post-secondary education in Canada continues to rise and
presents barriers to many deserving youth across Canada, with an increasing
number of students seeking scholarship support. In a 2007 report, the Canadian
Millennium Scholarship Foundation reported that 33% of high school graduates,
who did not pursue post secondary education, did so for financial reasons. The
same report stated that only 20% of youth from the lowest income bracket were
able to pursue post-secondary education opportunities.
"Without a quality education, young people will face increasing
challenges that limit their opportunities for success in their life and career
goals," said Pam Jolliffe, President and CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada.
"Giving the next generation of leaders the tools for success is a shared
passion for Boys and Girls Clubs and Future Shop and these scholarships play
an essential role. Together we are building a positive future for young people
across Canada."
Jenna-Lynn Burns, a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes,
is a recipient of a 2009 Future Shop Future Leader Scholarship.
"It is because of the scholarship that I am able to attend university.
What I am most grateful for is that this scholarship has allowed me to go to
school without having to worry about finances, I am able to concentrate on my
academics and I still have time to give back to my community, to work with
youth, to initiate change," said Burns. "Next year I will be attending
teachers college and expect to be exceedingly busy with program requirements
and placements. Future Leaders provides me with the financial freedom to
allocate my time to my community and my education."
Recipients of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships are selected
based on their outstanding contribution to their Boys and Girls Club and local
community, good academic standing and financial need.
