500 Infection Prevention and Control Professionals Will Meet in St. John's, Newfoundland Labrador



    
    The conference will address the core foundations of practice and new
    adaptations to address the challenges facing health care with the
    emergence of new infections, and implementation of effective
    interventions
    

    WINNIPEG, May 8 /CNW/ - This is an invitation to attend the 2009 National
Education Conference hosted by the Community and Hospital Infection Control
Association - Canada (CHICA-Canada). The conference will be held in St.
John's, Newfoundland Labrador at the Delta St. John's/St. John's Convention
Centre, May 9-14, 2009.
    Infection Prevention and Control Professionals come from all disciplines
and are professionally and occupationally interested in the prevention and
control of infections in all healthcare settings. Some of the sessions
anticipated include:

    Monday, May 11

    Two half day sessions will focus on Infection Prevention and Control
issues related to Mental Health and Long Term Care. Guest lecturers include
Nena Sandoval MHS, Eastern Health; Thomas Marrie MD, University of Alberta;
David Keast MSc MD, Aging Rehabilitation and Geriatric Care Research Centre,
University of Western Ontario.

    Tuesday, May 12

    KEYNOTE SPEAKER - Linda Duxbury PhD is an accomplished trainer and
speaker in the area of generational differences in work values.

    Tuesday, May 12

    The management of new and emerging pathogens will be discussed, drawing
from lessons learned across the country and around the world. Guest Lecturers:
Edward Ellis MD MPH, Tuberculosis Prevention and Control, Public Health Agency
of Canada; Philippe Lagacé-Wiens MD DTM&H, Travel and Tropical Medicine,
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

    Wednesday, May 13

    An expert Infection Prevention and Control panel will review the
implementation of Hand Hygiene Programs across Canada. This will be followed
by a Safer Healthcare Now! update on Patient Safety Initiatives. Guest
Lecturer John Embil MD, Winnipeg, will review Infection Prevention and Control
news items and 'hot topics'.

    Thursday, May 14

    Jim Hutchinson MD, Eastern Health, will update on issues in antibiotic
stewardship.

    Canadian experts will teleconference on H1N1 Influenza - Lessons Learned
and Preparing for the Next Outbreak. THIS SESSION IS CLOSED TO THE MEDIA.
INTERVIEWS WITH FACILITATORS ARE AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT (Jim Gauthier MLT

    Thursday, May 14

    CLOSING SPEAKER -Michael Borg MD MSc, President of the International
Federation of Infection Control, will present a global view on how Infection
Prevention and Control is established and sustained when resources are
limited.
