385 Post-Secondary Scholarships Awarded to Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Youth from across the Country since 2001 by Future Shop

Most Recent 55 Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarship Recipients
    Announced for 2007

TORONTO, June 28 /CNW/ - Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC) and Future
Shop are pleased to announce the selection of 55 Boys and Girls Club youth
from across Canada to receive a $3,000 Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarship
for the September 2007 school term. This marks the seventh consecutive year
Future Shop and BGCC have partnered to offer the post-secondary scholarships
to Boys and Girls Club youth -- bringing Future Shop's total investment in the
National scholarship program to over $1 million.
"The youth who receive our Future Leaders Scholarships each year are
inspiring," said Rick Lotman, Senior Vice President, Customer Experience,
Future Shop. "We knew as a company that we wanted to support youth and
education and made the commitment to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada seven
years ago that we would help create opportunities for their youth. We're
overwhelmed by the dedication of our recipients to their education, families,
communities and future ambitions. We are extremely proud of the difference
these scholarships have made in their lives."
Recipients of Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships are chosen for
demonstrating an inspiring commitment to their education and dedication to
their local Boys and Girls Club and community. In addition, students are
selected based on their financial need - more so than on their grades.
For Ghaith Dhaidan, a Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa member, the
scholarship will mean the opportunity to attend his first year in
Biopharmaceutical Science at the University of Ottawa without creating
excessive expense for his family. "This scholarship means a lot to me and my
family," Ghaith said. "When we arrived in Canada five years ago, my family
faced many obstacles including adapting to our new city and making ends meet.
With the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarship, my dream of studying medicine
is becoming a reality - I feel it will allow me to give back to the community
that has helped me."
With increasing financial pressures on families including post-secondary
education costs, Pam Jolliffe, President and CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of
Canada, indicated that for many of the youth the Clubs serve college or
university is out of reach without the financial support provided by the
Future Leaders Scholarships. "We are so proud of the many bright, talented
young people at the Clubs and through the Future Shop Future Leaders
Scholarships, we know they are getting the chance to fully realize their
educational and career goals."
Each scholarship includes either $2,000 or $2,500 toward tuition at the
post-secondary institution of the youth's choice for the school term beginning
September 2007, as well as a gift card valued at either $1,000 or $500
redeemable for Future Shop merchandise to assist with their studies.
This partnership makes Future Shop the largest private sector sponsor of
Boys and Girls Club scholarships in Canada and brings Future Shop's cumulative
investment in Canadian youth through the Future Shop Future Leaders
Scholarship program to well over $1 million.
Scholarship presentations will take place throughout the summer at Boys
and Girls Clubs and Future Shop stores in communities across the country.
