Toronto's Paul Myrehaug defeats 63 competitors, leaves audiences rolling
in the aisles
TORONTO, April 1 /CNW/ - As night fell on April Fool's Day, an eager
audience, industry heavyweights and Comedy Network cameras converged on
Downtown Toronto to witness the climax of an epic battle for comedy supremacy.
When the dust settled, Paul Myrehaug stood victorious, claming $25,000 and the
title of Great Canadian Laugh Off Champion.
Beginning Monday, March 26, a pool of 64 amateur and professional comics
from across the country and around the world took part in nightly eliminations
for one of the eight finalist spots. By Sunday, the weak had been weeded from
the wickedly funny and the stage was set for a stand-up showdown.
Myrehaug is no stranger to the podium. Over his five-year career, he's
placed second in the 2006 Seattle International Comedy Competition and
participated in the Vancouver and Halifax Comedy Festivals.
Paul credits Mitch Hedberg as his greatest influence and shares Hedberg's
subdued and sublime delivery. Now that he's won the $25,000, he hopes to use
it to advance his career, taking advantage of opportunities that had
previously been out of financial reach. "I went from broke to debt-free in one
night!" said Paul shortly after his victory.
"What Paul achieved is no small feat," said Mark Breslin, Yuk Yuk's
founder and CEO. "There were a lot of talented comics in the competition and
the elimination process with live judging isn't something most comedians, even
the pros, are used to. And let's be honest - unless you're Donald Trump, the
prospect of winning or losing $25,000 is a pretty big deal."
Adding to the stressful situation was a judging panel comprised of Bruce
Hills, COO of the Just for Laughs Festival, Eddie Brill, talent coordinator
for the Late Show with David Letterman and Michael Cox, talent executive for
the Showbiz Show with David Spade.
The Yuk Yuk's Great Canadian Laugh Off will air on the Comedy Network
later in 2007. Details to follow.
