Second multi-million windfall for the tiny Alberta hamlet!
WINNIPEG, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - Peers, Alberta, located 175 kilometres west of
Edmonton, could easily be called 'the luckiest town in Canada'. With a
population of 120 people, it's hard to believe that not one but two
multi-million Jackpots have been won by Peers residents! Dennis Halliday is
the hamlet's most recent winner, claiming $11 Million on the October 27th
LOTTO 6/49 draw! On July 25, 2005, a couple from Peers also won $8.2 Million
on LOTTO 6/49.
"I always dreamed of being a millionaire. I never thought I'd be a
multi-millionaire!" exclaimed Dennis, 67, who owns his own trucking company.
His LOTTO 6/49 Quick Pick ticket matched all six numbers, splitting the
$22 Million Jackpot with a ticket purchased in Northwest Territories.
Dennis bought a couple of tickets for the October 27th draw from
Whitecourt Esso, then stuck them on his fridge and forgot about them. This
past Sunday (November 4th), Dennis was checking tickets for that weekend's
LOTTO 6/49 draw when he remembered the older tickets. He was stunned when he
checked the winning numbers on the Internet. "The numbers were all there! I
dropped the ticket and went into the kitchen. I couldn't believe it. You have
no idea how many times I checked that ticket!"
He then went to a local lottery Retailer and said to the clerk, "Please
read me these numbers." When the clerk began counting all the zeroes on the
Claim Slip, Dennis knew he was a multi-millionaire! "When I found out I'd won,
I almost flipped on the floor!"
While all of this was happening, most of Dennis's family was holidaying
in Disneyland. "When I called, that hotel room was like a funeral - they were
all crying so much," he recalled. "But first they called me a liar about 20
times!" he laughed.
Dennis said he will use some of the winnings to help his three children
and three grandchildren, but he wants his entire family involved in making
decisions about the windfall. "I have such a wonderful family - you have no
idea - and I'm not about to wreck it with money," he said, adding he also
plans to buy the motor home of his and his wife's dreams.
The happy winner said he will also keep a promise he made to his
son-in-law. "We always said that if one of us won, we'd give the other person
$100,000." And now, Dennis will also buy his son-in-law's parents a new home.
"The trailer they are living in is literally rotting to the ground," he said.
"My son-in-law told me once, what goes around comes around. I've always
believed in that."
The LOTTO 6/49 Jackpot excitement continues after last night's
$35 Million Jackpot was not won. The Saturday, November 10th LOTTO 6/49
Jackpot is offered at $37 Million.
