TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Today Mrs. Helen Hull, joined by family and
friends, celebrated her late husband Murphy's life and legacy by announcing a
$10 million gift in support of Humber River Regional Hospital. Marian (Murphy)
Hull was one of Canada's pre-eminent real estate developers, and one of Humber
River Regional Hospital's most dedicated community champions.
In a letter to the hospital dated just before Mr. Hull's death last June,
Mr. and Mrs. Hull explained that the gift was "in appreciation of the
wonderful care provided by your fine hospital."
"Murphy made us a better hospital and this a better city," noted HRRH
President & CEO Dr. Rueben Devlin. "It's humbling to know that he thought so
highly of our hospital that one of his final acts was to help ensure our
future success. We are extremely grateful for Murphy and Helen's generous
support and for their faith in our hospital's future."
Forty years ago Mr. Hull's drive to make a real difference in the lives
of his fellow citizens resulted in the founding of the York-Finch Hospital,
now the Finch site of Humber River Regional Hospital. After donating the
property to site the hospital, Mr. Hull helped ensure the new hospital
succeeded by serving on its Board of Directors for the next 30 years,
including three years as Board Chair.
"Mr. Hull led by word and action," said current HRRH Board Chair Norm
Naumoff. "He was generous not just as a donor but with his time and advice as
well. As a Board we were privileged to have the counsel of Murphy for three
decades, an outstanding record of dedication to our hospital and our
"This gift from Helen and Murphy celebrates a legacy of service to our
hospital and our community," explained HRRH Foundation Board Chair Frank
Fazzari. "Murphy was one of those unique individuals who truly made a positive
and lasting contribution to his community."
The Hull gift will be used by the hospital to help with the
implementation of the hospital's new model of care, which includes a new
