WINNIPEG, April 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Steven Fletcher, MP for Charleswood-St.
James-Assiniboia and Parliamentary Secretary for Health, on behalf of the
Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, accompanied by Dr. Harvey
Chochinov, Member of the Governing Council for the Canadian Institutes of
Health Research (CIHR), announced today the recipients of an investment worth
$3 million to fund health research in Manitoba.
"Promoting ground breaking health research is a crucial component of our
government's plan to build a healthy, prosperous and innovative Canada," said
Mr. Fletcher. "The funding highlighted today is helping to enhance the health
research capabilities of the University of Manitoba, which will benefit all
Canadians."
The 9 research projects funded will be conducted at the University of
Manitoba. The studies will be carried out over periods of one to five years
and cover a wide spectrum of health research. Mr. Fletcher highlighted
researchers whose work exemplifies CIHR's comprehensive, problem-based
approach to funding health research:- Dr. Jitender Sareen and Dr. Brenda Elias (University of Manitoba) will
work with First Nations communities in northwest Manitoba to develop
culturally sensitive suicide prevention strategies for Aboriginal
people.
- Dr. Susan McClement (University of Manitoba) will study the ethical
issues encountered by health care aides who work with dying patients.
- Dr. John Gartner, Dr. Cynthia Ellison and Dr. Kent HayGlass (University
of Manitoba) will examine how a synthetic growth factor can prevent
graft-versus-host disease in bone marrow transplant patients.
"The CIHR health research funding announced today will advance knowledge
in many areas that are of strategic importance to Canada and will also
contribute to strengthening the research and training environment for young
Canadians in all regions of the country," said Dr. Chochinov.
The funding highlighted in this news release is part of a larger package
announced today by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health. A detailed list of
