April is Daffodil Month - Join our Team
TORONTO, March 30 /CNW/ - Approximately 60 per cent of Canadians have
been involved in the fight against cancer, according to poll results released
today by the Canadian Cancer Society. April is Daffodil Month and the Society
is calling on these committed volunteers and all Canadians to join us in the
fight against this disease.
"The cancer cause is one that really resonates with Canadians," says Dr.
Barbara Whylie, President and CEO, Canadian Cancer Society. "It is unfortunate
that so many of us have been affected by this disease, but it's encouraging to
see so many Canadians give their time and energy to work towards the
eradication of cancer."
Of the approximately 60 per cent of Canadians who have been involved in
the fight against cancer, 78 per cent are currently active for the cause.
Among all Canadians, 80 per cent intend to volunteer or donate to a cancer
charity in the future.
"April is the perfect time to get involved in the fight against cancer,"
says Whylie. "In communities across Canada, our dedicated volunteers will help
launch the Society's Daffodil Days for our month-long campaign."
Thousands of volunteers will be selling daffodils, knocking on doors and
organizing special events. This strong force will be raising awareness and
funds to help fight a disease that is the leading cause of premature death in
Canada. Almost 40 per cent of Canadian women and almost 45 per cent of men
will develop cancer during their lifetimes.
The Canadian Cancer Society focuses on five key areas to make inroads
against cancer:- Funding excellence in research on all types of cancer: Last year the
Society contributed $49.5 million to fund leading-edge cancer
research across Canada.
- Advocating for healthy public policy: The Society lobbies for
policies and legislation that encourage Canadians to adopt healthy
lifestyles, as well as protect them from cancer-causing substances.
- Prevention: The Society works to create environments where
Canadians' exposure to cancer risk factors is minimized.
- Providing information about cancer: More than 800,000 people have
been helped by the Canadian Cancer Society's toll-free, bilingual
Cancer Information Service. Our website receives more than 8,000
visits daily, providing current, easily accessible information about
all aspects of cancer.
- Supporting people living with cancer: Approximately 7,100 people
across Canada were helped by trained volunteers through the Society's
CancerConnection program this past year. This telephone based service
provides support to people diagnosed with cancer and their
caregivers.

About the poll

who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error for the total sample
is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted
according to Statistics Canada's most current education, age, gender and
region Census data to ensure a representative sample of the entire adult
population of Canada.
