ST. CATHARINES, ON, Aug. 27 /CNW/ - The Service Employees International
Union, Local 1 Canada (SEIU) will launch its Charity Day Off award for local
SEIU members today at a union office open house in St. Catharines.
Mayor Brian McMullan of St. Catharines will help launch the
SEIU-sponsored paid day off.
The SEIU Charity Day Off will be awarded every year to a local SEIU
member to allow them to do something for a charity or community group - or
even something special within their family, since charity begins at home, says
SEIU Local 1 Canada president Sharleen Stewart.
The union office open house is a celebration of SEIU's membership growth
in the Niagara region and the union moving its Niagara Region Office into
larger premises at One St. Paul Street, St. Catharines. "Moving into new,
larger premises shows how much SEIU matters to our members in the Niagara
Region, and what better way to mark this success than creating the SEIU
Charity Day Off award to celebrate what SEIU is all about - helping improve
the lives of working people, their families, and our communities," says
Stewart.
SEIU has been representing members in the Niagara region for almost 60
years, including more than 6000 members who work in hospitals, nursing and
retirement homes, home care and community services throughout the region.
SEIU Local 1 Canada is the largest health care union local in Ontario,
representing 46,000 members province-wide.WHO: Sharleen Stewart, President, SEIU Local 1 Canada and Mayor
