TORONTO, Dec. 2 /CNW/ - Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
President Peter Hume today announced on behalf of AMO's Board of Directors
that the City of Windsor and the County of Essex have been chosen to jointly
host the 2010 AMO Conference on August 15-18, 2010.
"The 2010 AMO Conference will provide a significant economic boost to
Windsor and Essex County," said AMO President Peter Hume. "As a province-wide
municipal association, we have an interest in providing this opportunity to
all Ontario municipalities that have the hotel and meeting facilities needed
to host a conference of its size."
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Windsor and Essex County to welcome
representatives from across the province and to showcase all that this region
has to offer," said Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis. "This is a region that is on
the front line of many of the challenges facing municipalities in Ontario
today and we hope that holding the conference here will add a further
dimension to the experience for conference participants."
"The County of Essex is pleased to co-host the 2010 AMO Conference. The
fact that our two municipalities have partnered to host this conference speaks
to its size, scope and economic impact," said County of Essex Warden Nelson
Santos. "Many of the topics covered at the Annual AMO Conference are
significant for rural municipalities, and for the first time, it will be able
to address them in a rural setting, with opportunities for relevant out-trips
and other great learning opportunities."
The annual AMO Conference is Ontario's foremost educational forum for
municipal governments and it grows in size each year. In 2008, AMO Conference
participants included more than 1,800 municipal delegates, Ontario's Premier,
most of the Ontario Government's Cabinet, Federal Government Ministers, and
both of Ontario's opposition leaders. The trade show at the 2008 Conference
featured more than 140 exhibitors, bringing total attendance to well over
2,500 people. Typically, more than 30 plenary sessions and workshops are
scheduled, featuring approximately 80 speakers on topics that address public
priorities, municipal management and the delivery of government programs and
services. The 2009 AMO Conference will be held in Ottawa.
AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario's 445
municipal governments. AMO supports strong and effective municipal government
in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and
essential component of Ontario and Canada's political system.
