The Importance Of Calcium And Vitamin D: Getting Vitamin D Can Be Tricky, Even When It's Sunny!

Herbal Magic supplement provides most absorbable form of Vitamin D - D3

TORONTO, May 16 /CNW/ - For most of us, a daily supplement of calcium is
nothing new. We've long been educated in the importance of getting enough
calcium in our diet to prevent osteoporosis and build strong bones. Less known
is the fact that calcium by itself is not enough to help prevent fractures.
Without enough vitamin D, the additional calcium passes right through us.
Vitamin D is just as important as calcium because it helps the body
absorb calcium by as much as 80 per cent. It also plays a crucial role within
the immune system.
"Unfortunately, it's more than just a regular dose of sunshine," says
Kiran Basra, VP of Scientific Affairs for Herbal Magic Inc., Canada's largest
weight loss and nutrition chain. "Since most people lead busy lives, the
amount of calcium and vitamin D attained from diet alone often falls well
below recommended daily requirements. I can recommend Herbal Magic's
supplement because it contains Vitamin D in its most absorbable form - Vitamin
D3. It also contains no yeast, wheat gluten, soy, milk/dairy, corn, sodium,
sugar, starch, artificial colouring, preservatives, or flavouring."
Unlike most other vitamins and minerals, few foods are naturally good
sources of vitamin D, with the exception of oily fish. Most people don't eat
enough of these to meet their vitamin D needs.
In addition, many of us do not live in the right climate to allow for
optimum vitamin D exposure from the sun. Smog, sunscreen, and the position of
the sun in the sky can affect the amount of light the skin is exposed to and
the amount of vitamin D produced.
As a result, health care practitioners often recommend calcium and
vitamin D supplementation. Not only do they work well together as a first line
treatment for osteoporosis, PMS and diabetes, but the importance of getting
enough vitamin D may go far beyond bone health.
Many studies have shown that supplementing with calcium and vitamin D
assists the body in preventing the development of cancer. Recently, studies
have revealed that supplementing with calcium and vitamin D can reduce the
risk of cancer by as much 60 percent. This includes breast cancer, colon
cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer.
Today, the Canadian Cancer Society recommends that all adults should
supplement with vitamin D that offers 1000 IU per tablet because of its cancer
prevention properties. Furthermore, this dosage was found to be important in
increasing the life expectancy by a few years when compared to those
individuals who did not take vitamin D. This study, published in the Archives
of Internal Medicine, is just one of the latest to indicate this.
"The calcium-vitamin D partnership cannot be downplayed," say Basra from
Herbal Magic. "The research proves that this sunshine vitamin is good for more
than strengthening bones."
