TCP wins Facility of the Year Award

TORONTO, April 22 /CNW/ - At the 2008 Turnkey Conference, in Baltimore,
MD, The Toronto Centre for Phenogenomics was presented with the prestigious
Facility of the Year Award.
The 2008 Facility of the Year Award, sponsored by ALN(R) Magazine,
recognizes outstanding achievements in the design/build of a new or renovated
laboratory animal facility in North America. The award is intended to showcase
new ideas and accomplishments in facility design, construction and operation.
"We're thrilled with this award; it is outstanding to receive recognition
on behalf of an excellent team of talented individuals who contributed to the
conception, design, equipment and construction of the TCP. We all take great
pride in achieving what we accomplished here in Toronto and look forward to
our continued success and the capabilities our building will provide to enable
our contribution to human health research," stated CEO, Dr. Colin McKerlie.
The TCP, a 120,000 sq ft laboratory and vivarium, is an unprecedented
collaboration of four research-intensive hospitals. The building is a stand
alone structure within walking distance of each participating hospital.
Complementing the urban context of Toronto, the modern style of the Centre
blends into the city's backdrop. The building was designed to be
cost-effective and secure with areas for interaction, collaboration, training
facilities and flexible space to address future needs. A tightly constrained
urban site, underground utilities, rigid zoning restrictions, and plans for
future vertical expansion all drove the requirement for an innovative design.
Sixty percent of the floor plan is underground. The future master plan
includes a 300,000 sq ft, 15-storey tower to be built above the TCP.
