Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service Vehicle Stop leads to the RCMP Seizure of Cigarettes


    CORNWALL, ON, Nov. 3 /CNW/ - On October 31st, 2008, an officer from the
Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service observed a 1999 Chevrolet Venture van travel
from Akwesasne, Ontario towards Cornwall. The officer observed the driver park
the van on Inverness Avenue in Cornwall and flee on foot. The officer then
observed cardboard boxes of cigarettes inside the van and contacted the
Cornwall RCMP Detachment to assist. RCMP officers seized 1,500 resealable bags
of cigarettes that represent 300,000 cigarettes believed to have been
manufactured in the United States. Officers also seized the van. The driver
was not located and the investigation continues.
    "In this investigation the officer was conducting a trespassing on an
Indian Reserve offence when the driver fled from his vehicle," said Sgt.
Michael Harvey of the RCMP. "We will continue to ensure our communities remain
safe from suspicious activities."
