SQL Power's Power*Architect Goes Open Source

TORONTO, July 11 /CNW/ - Is Open Source software the way of the future?
The Data Warehousing experts at Toronto-based SQL Power Group are betting on
it. On 7/7/07, SQL Power published the source code of the popular
Power(*)Architect Data Modeling Tool on their web site, www.sqlpower.ca. This
release makes them the first-to-market with a cross-platform, Open Source data
modeling tool with ETL integration.
Since 2003, SQL Power has been using the Power(*)Architect internally as a
powerful data modeling tool, giving them the edge over their competition. So
why are they giving it away for free as Open Source software?
"We believe that database productivity tools are becoming a commodity
these days, with several good open source alternatives to most proprietary
database tools. In support of the Open Source community and in order to
provide companies with a low cost (Free) alternative to ERwin and other
proprietary database design tools, SQL Power has decided to distribute the
Power(*)Architect for free to all database designers and data modelers around
the world. Also, by embracing the open source model, we are leveraging the
efforts of the world-wide Java community." said Sam Selim, president of SQL
Power.
Selim believes that Open Source software is the future for Data Warehouse
& Business Intelligence projects, because clients can take the money they used
to spend on license fees and use it towards value-adding development.
Is this strategy working? The 4000-and-counting Power(*)Architect downloads
over the first week of the Open Source release suggest that it is.
